Briggs (Medical College of Virginia, M.D. 1899) practiced medicine in Boston, Mass. and was instrumental in founding the Boston Psychopathic Hospital and Metropolitan State Hospital. His great interest was forensic psychiatry. The so-called "Briggs Law" of Massachusetts can be credited to his influence; this provides for a mental examination before trial of all persons indicted for a felony in the state.
